Wrestlers pick up wins in home dual
Grafton falls short of team regional placing
For the Grafton Spoiler wrestling team, Thursday night marked the end of the regular season and the end of the home career for one wrestler and two statisticians.
Seniors Michael Moran, McKinzie Lopez and Cassie Smith were recognized prior to Thursday’s match against West Marshall, formerly Warren-Alvarado-Oslo.
The Spoilers won in thrilling fashion, 47-9.
“It was nice to get a win in our final home dual,” Grafton head coach Brad Larson said. “This one was for the seniors.”
Grafton, after six straight weight classes with no opponents, finally saw wrestling at the 145-pound weight class.
Grafton’s Jaron Lunday, who is regarded as one of the top wrestlers in this region and the state in his weight class, took to the mat early and often, defeating his opponent, West Marshall’s Hunter Roller by technical fall, 15-0.
“He is more focused,” Larson said. “If he keeps on going, he will do well.”
The next wrestling action took place in the 160 pound weight class, when West Marshall’s Trevor Matelski defeated Grafton’s Triston Nelson by a score of 8-4. The match went the distance in all three periods, but Nelson couldn’t get an edge against his opponent.
Grafton’s Jose Martinez picked up the Spoilers next win at the 195-pound weight class, as he pinned his opponent Conner Jensen just 43 seconds into the second period.
“If he does what we go over in practice, he has a good chance of making it to the state tournament,” Larson said.
Regional dual tournament
The Spoilers took to the road to Harvey late Friday evening for the start of the Region 2 Dual tournament at the Harvey High School.
Grafton came out of the tournament in sixth place, falling short of advancing to the state tournament as a team.
In the quarterfinal round of the tournament, the Spoilers faced one of the top teams in this region, the Pembina County North Grizzlies.
Grafton as a team only had two wins in the quarterfinal round, a forfeit win by Jaron Lunday in the 145-pound weight class, and a win by Shane Burns in the 182-pound weight class.
Burns’ win came at the 2:46 mark of the match, securing six of Grafton’s 12 team points.
In the first round of the consolation bracket, the Spoilers bounced back with a 41-24 defeat over the MayPort-CG Patriots.
126-pounder Matthew Miller of Grafton was the first to wrestle, and he went deep into the third period of his match, eventually defeating Ben Berdal at the 5:45 mark of the third period.
Then, several forfeits later, Jose Martinez defeated George Gardiner at the 3:03 mark of the match in the 195-pound weight class.
In the heavyweight class, Michael Moran won by an 8-6 decision.
Dalton Hannesson followed Moran’s win with one of his own, winning with a 4-0 decision.
Grafton’s last win of the match against MPCG was a technical fall by Hector Reyes.
The Spoilers then went up against another region foe in the consolation semifinals, Larimore.
Jaron Lunday made quick work of his opponent Reece Johnson, winning in 51 seconds.
Moran picked up another win over Austin Reistad in 1:33.
Hector Reyes and Matthew Miller also picked up pin victories.
This coming Saturday, the Spoilers will travel to Hillsboro, where the individual region tournament will take place on Saturday.
