Spoilers split on senior night
Doubleheader brings cheers and happy tears in Grafton
The Grafton Spoilers boys and girls basketball teams invited the Thompson Tommies to play last Monday for their senior night celebrations and came away with a split decision. The boys team won 67-41 in what ended with a tear and cheer inducing last-second basket by Grafton’s senior Blake Bjornson.
The girls team fell to the state-ranked Tommies by a score of 74-36.
The senior recognition ceremony for both the girls and the boys basketball teams was held in between games with a video montage and parent presentation program.
Recognition of senior cheerleaders were Jenae Koplin, Karissa Moore and Rachel Gerner. Jessica Burns was the lone senior represented on the girls basketball team.
The boys basketball seniors represented were Blake Bjornson, Austin Contreras, Julian Martinez, Jacob Garza, Andrew Carignan and Garek Droog.
The night began with the girls taking on the seasoned and well-balanced Tommies team. The Spoilers did a nice job containing them to only 12 points through the first quarter, unfortunately the Spoilers struggled offensively and trailed 12-2 after the first quarter.
The Spoilers pulled within eight midway through the second quarter at the 19-11 mark but after an 11-0 Tommies run the score began to widen eventually ending the first half 36-15 in favor of Thompson.
The third quarter pattern was reminiscent of the first half with the Tommies increasing their lead to 55-28. The Grafton girls struggled with finding the open shots and then turned the ball over frequently. The Tommies cruised to a 74-36 win.
The Grafton boys game was an almost identical mirror image of the girls game with the exception of the end result.
The Spoilers defense was suffocating through the first two quarters holding the Tommies to only 16 first half points, although the Spoilers struggled with turnovers and only led by 10 at halftime with a score of 26-16.
After the halftime break Grafton kept the Tommies at bay with a 25-11 third quarter spurt and held the lead after three 51-27. The Spoilers looked sharp moving the ball and created several fast break opportunities.
The Spoilers continued to increase the score eventually to 65-35. With 1:55 left to go in the game coach Riley Lillemoen called a timeout to allow Bjornson an opportunity to get into the game. After several shot attempts Bjornson was given a final chance with 1.1 seconds left in the game to register some varsity points. After rolling the ball from the Thompson endline Bjornson picked up the ball and shot as time expired…Swish. Grafton won 67-65.
