Spoilers fall to Titans
A hot match in Edinburg
The Grafton Spoilers volleyball team traveled to a warm Edinburg gymnasium last Thursday to take on the Drayton-Valley-Edinburg Titans in what was a hard fought battle with the Titans eventually securing a win at home 3-1.
The Spoilers gave a good solid effort and came out on top of the first set 25-20.
“The girls did a better job with their movement and communicating tonight,” said Grafton’s head coach Krysten Stutlien.
After the first set D-V-E took control of the second set with Jayln Larson leading the Titans and serving up seven service points in both the early and late stages of the set. D-V-E sailed to a 25-11 second set victory to tie the match at 1-1
The height advantage of the Titans played a factor in the third set, but the quick Grafton team made a late run with the score 24-17 in favor of the Titans. The Spoilers’ Megan Osowski closed the gap with three consecutive service points but Grafton fell short and lost the third set 25-20. The Titans took a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set was evenly played and entertained the crowd toward a very exciting ending. Late in the set, the Spoilers were down 20-17 when Jaden Hanson aced the next serve to close the gap 20-18. The Spoilers then cut the lead to 20-19 before Titans’ coach Kelli O’Toole called a timeout to try and halt the Spoilers’ run. After the timeout, Grafton tied the game at 20-20, then proceeded to take the lead at 21-20. D-V-E tied it back up at 21-21. Grafton scored the next point to go up 22-21 before the Titans ran off two points to reclaim the lead at 23-22 at which time Spoiler coach Stutlien called timeout. The strategy paid off and the Titans gave up a point that allowed Grafton to tie the game again at 23-23. The two teams exchanged points and at 24-24, the Spoilers had a miscommunication and fell behind 25-24. The Titans’ Larson held serve, but failed to seal the game. The teams once again exchanged points and the play of the night came with the Spoilers down 26-25. The Titans Larson hit a killshot to the back row that appeared to be unreachable, but great hustle by Lexi Hernandez and Emma Suda left the entire gym, including the Titans, bewildered as the ball was returned and fell untouched on the Titans side during a premature Titans celebration to tie the score at 26-26. The Titans quickly regrouped and won the next two points and the set to win the game 3-1.
“That was a fun game,” commented Titans head coach Kelli O’Toole.
Spoilers’ coach Stutlien agreed and said, “I was really impressed with the way the girls handled the pressure in that last set.”
D-V-E Titans Jalyn Larson led all players with 10 kills, 2 blocks and 3 aces followed by Kristy Estad with 9 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces.
The Spoilers’ top performers were Emma Suda, and Lucy El-Sarraf with 6 kills each.
