Spoilers fall in home opener
Grafton struggles after strong first set
The Grafton Spoilers volleyball team came out Tuesday night looking to improve on a disappointing end to last season, but fell to the Hillsboro-Central Valley Burros 3-0 at the Grafton High School gymnasium.
The Spoilers came out strong in the first set, keeping the score within just a few points throughout the set. They came up short 25-20, the closest score of the evening.
A lot of the offensive effort was put together by sophomore Megan Osowski, who finished with six kills for the Spoilers.
According to Grafton head coach Krysten Stutlien, the Spoilers and Burros went back and forth throughout the first half of the set.
“But in the end, we lost our momentum,” she said.
The Spoilers looked to rebound in the second set, but things quickly turned bad for the young Spoiler team.
After a few missed plays and mental errors, coach Stutlien and the team were staring at a 12-1 deficit.
The offense put forward by H-CV in the second set was paced by senior outside hitter Kennedy Henningsgard.
She put together a lengthy string of strong serves, putting the Spoilers behind the eight ball in the second set.
“We made some mental errors in that second set,” Stutlien said.
To add to the Spoiler woes, they missed serves and gave away too many easy points to the Burros, who won set two by a score of 25-8.
The third set was better in comparison to the second set, as the Spoilers were able to keep with the Burros for most of the first half of the final set, eventually falling 25-15.
The Spoilers were down at one point 13-8.
Weak back row attacks by the Spoilers contributed to many of the struggles they attempted to overcome.
Overall, the Spoilers saw some good and bad points throughout the contest, but it was the lack of experience the Spoilers had on the court proved to be their biggest challenge.
“We only have a few girls with varsity experience out there,” Stutlien said.
Lexi Hernandez, a sophomore, set up her teammates several times for successful points, racking up seven assists in the match.
H-CV was led by Rachel Murphy, who had 10 kills, one block and three service aces.
Kylie Pastian had six kills.
Henningsgard finished the match with two kills and three service aces.
The Spoilers will travel to Edinburg on Thursday to take on the Titans in their first District 4 match of the regular season.
