Spoilers come up short against Thunder
Grafton’s scrappy play against Hatton-Northwood shows team improvement
The Grafton Spoilers came into last Thursday’s match as the number five team in District 4. Their opponent, the Hatton-Northwood (H-N) Thunder entered the contest as the top team in District 3.
Despite the apparent mismatch, the Spoilers played the Thunder close most of the way before dropping the match 3-1.
The Thunder took an early lead in the first game, but the Spoilers battled back to take a 17-16 advantage with some strong play at the net.
The Thunder however, finished the game on a 9-3 run to take the first game of the contest 25-20.
The Thunder dominated the second game, jumping out to a 10-1 lead on the way to a 25-14 win, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Spoilers didn’t let down in the third game, coming back to win 25-23. The Spoilers started game three on a 6-0 run with Jaden Hanson at the service line, prompting an H-N timeout. The Thunder battled to within a point, 6-5, but the Spoilers went on a 4-point run to take 10-5 lead. The Thunder battled back to tie the game at 10-10, then both teams traded points for the rest of the game.
Grafton got to game point, 24-20, but the Thunder scored three-straight points to stay alive, before they were called for a net violation to give the third game to Grafton, 25-23.
H-N came back strong in the fourth set for a 25-13 win to take the match three games to one.
Jordan Johnson led the Thunder hitting attack with 16 kills, followed by Samantha Janda with 10 and Kelsey Pladson with seven. Jeni Lloyd was busy as the team’s primary setter and finished with 39 assists.
With the victory, the Thunder improved to 23-2 on the season. The Thunder are also perfect against District 3 opponents this year and will take the top seed in the District 3 Volleyball Tournament that starts this week.
A bright spot for the Spoilers in last Thursday’s contest was Desirae Contreras. The junior came up strong at the net, leading Grafton’s hitters with nine kills and a block.
Megan Osowski and Emma Suda added six kills each for the Spoilers, followed by Payton Schaan with one. Schaan led Grafton with two blocks.
Osowski led Grafton at the service line with three aces, followed by Suda with one. Lexi Hernandez led the Spoilers with seven assists.
The loss dropped the Spoilers to 5-22 overall. The Spoilers, who finished 2-4 against District 4 competition, will take the number five seed into the District 4 Volleyball Tournament which is scheduled to start Thursday in Grafton.
