Spoilers claim victory in Enderlin
Grafton clips Falcons 26-20 in nail-biter
The Grafton football team put together a solid performance last Friday in Enderlin and defeated the Maple Valley-Enderlin Falcons by a score of 26-20.
Spoilers’ quarterback Hunter Baldwin was 7-for-20 in the air racking up 108 yards and one touchdown and running nine times for 28 yards. Grafton’s rushing attack was led by Julian Martinez who carried 29 times for 108 yards and a touchdown. Andrew Carignan went 50 yards on nine carries.
The Spoilers receiving corps consisted of Dylan Boura 2-for-21 yards and a touchdown, Zak Hernandez was 2-for-22 yards, Garek Droog was 1-for-28 yards and Andrew Carignan was 2-for-37 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball it was a balanced team effort led by Carignan with two solo tackles and eight assists. Martinez had a solo tackle and eight assists. Jaron Lunday had five assists and a solo tackle in addition to an interception ran back for a touchdown. Hernandez also had a timely interception.
It didn’t take long for the Spoilers to jump out front 6-0. After a four and out opening drive for the Falcons the Spoilers only needed one play, a Baldwin 22-yard pass to Boura at the 10:38 mark of the first quarter to set the tone. Julian Martinez added the two-point conversion to make the score 8-0
The Falcons came back at the end of the first quarter with a score of their own on a 46-yard pass from Jess Johnson to Daniel Lindgren. The extra point attempt failed making the score 8-6 in favor of the Spoilers.
Grafton scored again late in the second quarter after a 28-yard pass from Baldwin to Droog that put the Spoilers at the Falcon’s 5-yard line. That set up the Spoilers second score three plays later on a 1-yard touchdown run by Carignan with 2:48 to play in the first half. The game remained 14-6 to close out the half.
Grafton continued with confidence in the second half scoring at the 2:42 mark in the third quarter after a touchdown was called back earlier in the drive due to a Spoilers’ holding penalty. The Spoilers expanded the lead shortly after that on a Martinez 7-yard run. The extra-point attempt failed but the Spoilers upped the score to 20-6.
Maple Valley-Enderlin dug deep into the playbook at the 2:20 mark of the third quarter and scored on a trick play in which everyone except the center, quarterback and a running back set up wide to catch the Spoilers off guard and Johnson connected with Austin Dickson for a 45-yard touchdown pass. The extra-point conversion was successful and reduced the margin 20-14 with the Spoilers holding onto the lead.
Grafton had a couple of key interceptions in the fourth quarter. Hernandez stopped a Falcon drive at the 9:30 mark for the first one and the next one was a Lunday interception returned 15 yards for a touchdown at 5:47 to put the Spoilers up 26-14.
The Falcons kept the game exciting after going 56 yards on their next possession to score a touchdown with 3:21 left in the game. They closed the score to 26-20 with the Spoilers still out front.
The Falcons got the ball back one more time and drove to the Spoilers’ 48-yard line. With :05 seconds remaining and facing fourth down, the Falcons had one last shot to tie the game but came up short. The Spoilers held on to win 26-20.
“We didn’t play our best game, but found a way to win,” said Grafton’s coach Tom Maus. “The seniors are really starting to pick up their games and play well. Jaron (Lunday) made a big play on the interception and it is nice to see other players starting to step up,” he added.
