New owner, new name – everything else remains the same
purchases Top Hat Saloon in Pisek
The first of the year, Cally Odstrcil became the new owner of the former Top Hat Saloon in Pisek. Aside from a name change, she has few changes in store for the Pisek bar now known as “The Sandbar.”
Odstrcil has been associated with the Top Hat for about eight years as an employee of Curt and Wanda Sarkilahti, who promoted her to bar manager five years ago. When the Sarkilahtis decided it was time to retire last fall, the first offer they put on the table was to Odstrcil. It was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up.
“Curt and Wanda wanted to retire and I couldn’t see it going any other way except into my hands,” Odstrcil said. “It’s been my baby for five years, it might as well be my own.”
Odstrcil, a native of the Forest River area and of Czech background, said she chose to change the name of the establishment to reflect the city of Pisek.
“Pisek means sand city in Czech so that is why I decided to go with that name,” she remarked.
Well-known in the area for good food, Odstrcil said The Sandbar will continue to offer the same palette-pleasing cuisine that had become a big draw for the Top Hat. The menu remains the same with Mexican food served on Tuesdays, homemade pizza – a customer favorite – on Wednesdays and monster burgers on Thursdays. A full menu is offered Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Jeremy Sarkilahti will continue as a cook Thursday through Sunday, along with Odstrcil who cooks on Tuesday and Wednesday. Customers will also see the same familiar faces behind the bar.
Bar hours are 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 2 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Food is served from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 5 to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m.
Although she has no plans for changes at the present time, she said patrons of The Sandbar will see some gradual changes in the future. One of the changes she is anticipating is removing a pool table to allow for more space in the dining area, which currently has a seating capacity of about 45.
For the past five years Odstrcil has enjoyed the bar business and her customers are what she enjoys the most.
“All the customers, all the faces that come in here,” she remarked. “I love being around people, I’m a people person and I love gabbing with people.”
