AFGHANISTAN—Two Mondays ago on Aug. 9, Clayton Jarolimek a first lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps and Minto High School graduate was injured by an improvised exploding device (IED) while on foot patrol in Afghanistan.

Since that time he has been airlifted to the United States with about five stops in between.

According to Clayton’s mom, Dawn Jarolimek of Forest River, he’s recovering nicely on an outpatient basis outside of Camp Pendleton, Calif. at his home with his wife.

“He’s doing a lot better,” she said. “He still hasn’t gotten all of his eyesight back, but he’s making a miraculous recovery.”

The explosion was from an IED called a butterfly that pops up and explodes. The explosion left Clayton with a broken jaw and some broken bones in his face and debris in his eye, Dawn said.

Board of Commissioners receives another favorable fiscal audit

The long awaited work on Walsh County Road No. 9 is set to begin next week, weather pending.

The Walsh County Commission was informed of the construction schedule for No. 9 by County Highway Superintendent Sharon Lipsh at Tuesday’s regularly scheduled meeting.

“Grading, dirt work, culverts are scheduled to begin Monday,” she said. “There will be some road closure. Hopefully only a mile will be closed at a time. No detours are planned.”

Pre-pile harvest at the Nash piler is planned for Sept. 8-10, with paving of the road from U.S. Highway 81 west to State Highway 18 planned to start on Sept. 20. Paving is expected to last a week, Lipsh said.

“There aren’t going to be any three-foot shoulders on the road,” she said. “The shoulders will be similar to those on Walsh County Road 15 near Voss.”

Front Page : Grafton native Jim Clark has traveled the world teaching EXPERIENCE of a lifetime.
on 08/18/2010 (125 reads)

GRAFTON—When one thinks of the teaching profession, one doesn’t conjure up ideas of travel, 3,000 square foot apartments, maids or chauffeurs, but for Grafton native Jim Clark that is what a degree in education from UND got him.

Jim, who is 69, grew up in Grafton. His brother was Fred Clark and sister, Dorothy. His parents were Bill and Eleanor Clark. Eleanor still resides in Grafton and is the reason Jim continues to visit. That and to have a rendezvous with some former colleagues and friends at Lynn Lake, Manitoba before heading back to his home in the Philippines.

“I grew up in north Grafton next to the river with the Demesters, Ganyos and Moes,” he said.

Jim’s dad, however, got a job in Walhalla and he moved to Walhalla in eighth grade.

“I was disappointed. I really wanted to wear the maroon and gold of the Spoilers,” he said. Jim graduated from Walhalla High School in 1961 and served in the National Guard and regular Army before graduating UND in 1971.

Red River Basin Commission develops model to reduce flooding 20 percent in basin

Just as all politics are local, it seems that water regardless of where it originates seems to become a local issue also.

Much of the discussion at Tuesday’s Walsh County Commission meeting dealt with water issues on both ends of the county.

Commissioner Ernie Barta informed the board that it appears the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) won’t allow pumping of water from Nelson County into the Forest River and in turn Matejcek Dam.

The conversation focused on issues related to an existing agreement between the Walsh and Nelson County Water Resource Districts to remove sheet water for the McHugh-Laretta and Hovey Slough Flood Projects.
