History of the Walsh County Record
 |
| The Walsh County Record was started in 1890 under the direction of Almen Leroy Woods and Edward Horace Pierce. In August of 1908 Mr. Woods passed away due to a heart attack. Mr. Pierce continued to publish the Walsh County Record until September of 1908. At that time Mr. Pierce then sold the publication to Grant S. Hager. Mr. Hager continued to work at the paper until the time of his death. Rilie R. Morgan, after Mr. Hager’s death, purchased the newspaper from Mrs. Hager in November 1923. Rilie at this time started selling office supplies and printed material under the name of The Record Printers. In 1948 The Walsh County Record installed a Duplex Press which enabled them to print 4200 copies per hour. Mr. Morgan continued as The Walsh County Record’s publisher until January 1, 1959, when after 55 years in the newspaper field he relinquished his position to his son John D. Morgan. In 1965 three of Rilie’s children, John, Mary and Jeanette, purchased the business from their father. Mary moved to Grand Forks, ND and opened a branch office of The Record Printers. At this time the printing operation was renamed Associated Printers. In early 1973 the name of the newspaper was changed to The Grafton Record to more completely identify with the city of publication. Quality work continued to be a top priority under the new management. The Record/Associated Printers purchased one of the first offset newspaper presses in the North Central United States in the 1970’s. The original three unit goss Community press is still producing fine quality work today after having been rebuilt from the ground up in 1985. | Morgan Publishing acquired Wold Printing of Larimore in 1983. Wold Printing produced The Leader which is the Official Publication of the Grand Forks Air Force Base. John Morgan purchased the stock of his sisters in the late 1970’s and named his corporation Morgan Publishing D/B/A The Walsh County Record and Associated Printers. In 1985 John sold stock in Morgan Publishing to all six of his children. That same year, Morgan Publishing purchased a 2 color Miehle Press to reproduce 4 color comic and magazine covers better and more economically. In November of 1990 Morgan Publishing purchased a Heidelberg 5 color GTO press. This allows all colors to print on one pass through the press. With the addition of the 5 color GTO press, Morgan Publishing has again invested heavily into technology that helps make it one of the finest quality printing companies in the United States. In July of 1991 Ray Morgan sold his interest in Morgan Publishing back to the corporation. In March of 1993 the choice was made to change the name of The Record back to The Walsh County Record. |
