Midway students ‘Fuel Up To Play 60’
School wins contest; Viking mascot visits
Minnesota Vikings mascot, Viktor the Viking was a special guest at Midway School last Tuesday, April 19, when the students were awarded the grand prize in the “Fuel Up To Play 60 – Show Your Spirit” Challenge, part of the Healthy School Makeover Contest.
In October, the students at Midway entered the Healthy School Makeover Contest by submitting a video they created featuring a catchy tune that told the story of how they are eating healthier and are more physically active. For the students to reach the final stage of the competition, patrons of the school district went online to vote for the school. The video was then selected the winner by a panel of judges.
According to Char Heer, a registered dietitian and health and wellness program manager with the Midwest Dairy Council, selection of the winning schools was based on entries where healthy minded students created a video, song, commercial or cheer that inspired everyone to get involved in making their school a healthier place.
“Participation in the “Show Your Spirit” Challenge exceeded our expectations and the judge’s panel was equally impressed with the overall effort, originality and creativity of the students’ entries,” Heer said.
On March 25, the school received the announcement from the Midwest Dairy Council and Cass-Clay Creamery, sponsors of Fuel Up To Play 60 along with the NFL and the National Dairy Council, that Midway was one of two schools winning a $3,000 grand prize to be used for cafeteria upgrades and physical fitness equipment.
Shortly after receiving the news that the school had won the grand prize, it was announced that Viktor the Viking would be visiting the school to present the check, as well as a healthy eating/activities program. Last week, at a special assembly, the NFL mascot interacted with the students through a video presentation, cheers and a nutrition trivia contest.
