Grafton Golden Gloves hosts Silver Gloves Boxing Tournament
The 2014 Region 4 Silver Gloves Boxing Tournament was held in Grafton at the Armory last Saturday and Sunday and attracted over 24 competitors from North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
Two local boxers, Steven Garza and Damon Reyes will advance to the Silver Gloves national tournament that will be held in Independence, Mo. on January 29-Feb 1.
Garza defeated Troy Red Cloud from South Dakota with a unanimous decision in the 10-11 year old, 95 pound division. Reyes also won his bout with a unanimous decision over Ryder Grove of Minnesota in the 12-13 year old, 100 pound division.
Other local boxers that competed were Justin Garza, 10-11, 85-pound class, Tony Narro, 12-13, 119-pound class, Matthew Alanis, 12-13 132-pound class, and Adrian Contreras, 12-13, 80 pound class, all from Grafton. Christian Alanis also competed in a non-tournament bout.
National Silver Gloves is an advancing amateur boxing organization for 10-15 year olds that is sanctioned by USA Boxing, who is the national governing body for Olympic-style amateur boxing. It is overseen by the United States Olympic Committee and the International Boxing Association, who sets its rules.

The Region 4 Silver Gloves tournament was for boxers ages 8-15 that competed in four divisions, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15 year-old classes. These age divisions are then divided into weight classes in increments of 5, 7, 9 or 12 pounds depending on the ages.
