G-PR wins back-to-back in EDC

After suffering a 5-4 loss to Grand Forks Red River on Jan. 8, the Grafton-Park River Spoilers have bounced back with a pair of lopsided wins where they outscored their opponents by a 17-1 margin. The Spoilers defeated Grand Forks Central 10-0 last Thursday and Tuesday they topped West Fargo 7-1.

Last Thursday’s game between the Spoilers and the Grand Forks Central Knights was almost over before it started. In a span of three minutes and 35 seconds in the first period, the Spoilers scored five consecutive goals effectively putting the game to bed.
Cole Rehovsky put G-PR on the board first at the 5:23 mark, assisted by Zach Peterson; Ben Thompson scored at 5:35 assisted by Ryan Woinarowicz; Jade Miller scored the first goal of  his hat trick at 6:18, assisted by Peter Hills and Zach Feltman; Peterson scored his first goal of the game at 7:47 assisted by Rehovsky and Johnny Robideaux; and Miller scored his second goal at 8:58, assisted by Hills and Levi Cudmore, giving the Spoilers a 5-0 lead.
In the second period, the Spoilers took advantage when Central’s Casey Johnson was whistled for a 5-minute major for checking from behind and ejected from the game at the 3:59 mark.
Only 27 seconds later, Cudmore took a pass from Rehovsky and beat Central goalie Tanner Bender  over his stick-side shoulder to make the score 6-0.
Robideaux made the score 7-0 when he flicked a wrist shot medium-deep in the slot at the 5:07 mark to beat Bender again.
Miller completed his hat trick at the 13:15 mark assisted by Peter Hills when he flipped the puck over goalie Austin Burkett’s glove into the net.
The third period went by quickly with a running clock. The Spoilers wrapped up the scoring with an unassisted goal by Ben Thompson at 10:45 and Peterson’s second goal of the game at 12:30, assisted by Miller and Robideaux.
G-PR goalie Zach Nelson stopped all 13 shots to come his way to pick up the win. The combination of Bender and Burkett made a total of 19 saves in the loss for Central.
G-PR 7, West Fargo 1
The Spoilers improved to 6-3 in the EDC and 10-6 overall with a 7-1 win over the West Fargo Packers Tuesday. The game played in West Fargo was a make-up game that was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was postponed because of the blizzard that hit the region.
The Spoilers got on the board first at the 13:36 mark of the first period on Zach Peterson’s fifth goal of the season, assisted by Johnny Robideaux. Sophomore Levi Cudmore got the eventual game winner with 55 seconds left in the opening period assisted by Zach Feltman.
Blake Nelson got the Packers lone goal of the contest at the 2:22 mark of the second period to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Spoilers.
From that point on, it was all G-PR as the Spoilers scored five consecutive goals.
Peter Hills got the first goal of his hat trick at 3:08, assisted by Jade Miller. Ben Thompson made the score 4-1 at the 4:15 mark of the second period on his goal assisted by Brit Brouillard.
Cole Rehovsky picked up his 10th goal of the season at the 3:14 mark of third period assisted by Robideaux and Feltman to make the score 5-1.
Hills accounted for the final two goals of the game, the first at 9:41 assisted by Miller and Cudmore. The second goal came at 9:41 assisted by Josh Burianek.
Zach Nelson stopped 21 shots to get the win and Bailey Vareberg stopped 39 shots in the loss for West Fargo.
