Bemidji State signs football recruits
BEMIDJI, Minn. – Bemidji State University head football coach Jeff Tesch announced on Feb. 5 the addition of 24 student-athletes to the BSU roster for the 2014 season. The class is comprised of 21 high school seniors who will join the program as true freshmen next year and three transfers who are already enrolled at Bemidji State.
The 2014 class was drawn from six states, with 14 hailing from Minnesota. In addition, committed players currently reside in Wisconsin (4), Illinois (2), North Dakota (2), Arizona (1) and Delaware (1).
Austin Contreras is one of two North Dakota seniors that signed a letter of intent with the Beavers to play football starting in the fall of this year. Contreras is a two-time all-region player and an all-state honoree as a junior. He helped guide Grafton High School to a state championship in 2011 and a runner-up finish in 2012.
The four-year starter totaled 202 yards and four touchdowns on the ground as a senior, added 17 receptions for 282 yards and nine touchdowns with 14 tackles before an injury cut his season short. As a junior he totaled 14 receptions for 286 yards and four touchdowns and rushed 30 times for 275 yards and a score. He tacked on 37 tackles and an interception as a defensive back. Contreras earned Red Pepper Player of the Week honors during his prep career. As a four-sport athlete he earned 14 letters in track (5), football (4), basketball (4) and baseball (1). He was named all-conference as a junior on the hardwood for a Spoilers team that finished fifth at state. He was successful on the track as a four-time state participant, qualified for six events last year and is a three-time region champion in the high jump. Contreras is an honor roll student and is the son of Frank Sr. and Jennifer Contreras of St. Thomas.
