Drayton-Valley-Edinburg girls see season end
For most of Monday’s quarterfinal game between Drayton-Valley-Edinburg and MayPort-CG, the Titans were on the outside looking in. Despite a furious comeback, the Titans came up short, suffering a 46-43 loss to Patriots.
MPCG led 8-6 after one quarter, 19-14 at halftime and 34-28 after three. The Titans trailed 41-31 with just over four and a half minutes to go in the game after a pair of made free throws by Alicia Gibson.
With 4:18 to go Haley Braathen hit one of two free throws to cut the lead to nine points. At the 3:44 mark, Shayna Phelps scored the Titans first field goal of the fourth quarter, a 3-pointer, that made the score 43-35 in favor of MayPort-CG. (more…)

Irwin leds Mustangs with 20 points
On the upside, the Midway-Minto (M-M) Mustangs held the Hillsboro-Central Valley (H-CV) Burros to 50 points in Tuesday’s quarterfinal game of the Region 2 Girls’ Basketball Tournament. On the downside, the Mustangs struggled offensively and that translated into a 50-34 loss, an exit to the tournament and an end to the 2012-2013 basketball season.
“They scored more points than we wanted them to, but I think they (H-CV) had to earn their points,” M-M coach Randy Rice said. “I didn’t see a lot of (H-CV) kids out there smiling while they were playing.”
Midway-Minto sophomore MacKenzie Irwin fired the first salvo of the game to put the Mustangs up 3-0, but the Burros answered with the next seven points on the way to a 12-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. (more…)

Grafton 64  North Border 33
It didn’t take long for the theme of this game to play out.  Pressure defense by the Spoilers.  Grafton put the clamps on the North Border Eagles in both the full and half courts as the number one seed easily advanced to Monday’s championship game behind a stifling defensive effort.
On the offensive end it was Brooke Feltman (13 pts) who took over early.  The senior center scored her team’s first six points.  Kyla Horgan (8 pts) answered for the Eagles keeping this one close at 6-4 with a couple baskets inside.  The Spoilers would go on a 20 to 4 run over the next eight minutes and with the second quarter just underway, this one seemed to be on the verge of being decided.  The Spoilers were on fire as first half wound down. Alison Burns started nailing long 3-pointers (3 in the first half) to go along with a nifty steal at the half-court line, a behind-the-back dribble through traffic and a lay-in at the other end.  That bucket made it 38 to 11.  A Thompson basket at the buzzer closed out the first half with the Spoilers on top 40 to 15.   (more…)

Drayton-Valley-Edinburg, North Border win in first round of play

Drayton-Valley-Edinburg 55
Cavalier 29
The Titans had little trouble handing the Tornadoes an opening round loss as they rode the tall shoulders of senior Kadee Gullickson to an easy 26 point win.  Gullickson would score 23 on the night and  in the process score career points 1,001 midway through the fourth quarter.
Gullickson would start strong for the Titans, scoring ten of the Titans first thirteen points as the Titans built up an early 13 to 4 lead.  A Kari Olson basket at the end of the quarter would close out the first eight minutes with the Titans on top 20 to 7.
The Tornadoe’s Leighanna Helgoe would try to keep Cavalier in this one as she knocked down a pair of buckets early in the second but the Titans would answer with another Gullickson basket inside and a three-pointer by Haley Braathen that made it 31 to 14 with two minutes to play in the half.  A three-point play by Courtney Estad would close out the half with the Titans on top 34 to 16.   (more…)
