V-E student’s
project earns gold rating at districts

The National Safety Council estimates 1.6 million crashes each year are caused by drivers using cell phones and texting. This is just one of the statistics that led Hayley Fingarson of Valley-Edinburg High School to choose the subject for her Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Event project “Don’t Text Yourself to Death.”
Fingarson encouraged all Valley-Edinburg High School students to take the AT&T It Can Wait pledge at www.itcanwait.com.  Fingarson then set a goal to educate beginning drivers about the dangers of texting while driving. Her project began with a pre-test to assess eighth and ninth grade students’ attitudes about texting and driving, a speech which included facts and educational videos about the dangers, and distribution of thumb rings to remind students to not text while driving. Health careers
students resuscitate simulation model
SimMan 3G was in the health careers classroom at North Valley Career and Technology Center last week. The reason for his visit was two-fold – to simulate a medical situation, allowing students to practice life-saving skills, as well as to pique the students’ interest in medical-related fields.
Looking at his name, one might guess  SimMan 3G is a super hero. What he is a  patient simulator so advanced, it is actually pre-programmed to imitate functions of the human body. According to Katie Thompson, an education coordinator for the Eastern North Dakota Area Health Education Center (AHEC) satellite office in Grafton, SimMan 3G is programmed to simulate spontaneous breathing, chest rise and fall, heart sounds, pulse palpation, blood pressure, pupillary response, sweating, seizures and a host of other bodily functions. It responds to medications, CPR chest compressions and a host of other therapies and treatments, while its vital signs, oxygen saturation level and EKG register on a wireless monitor. (more…)

PRHS has only chapter in county
As The National FFA Organization celebrates National FFA Month across the country in February, the chapter in Park River has much to be proud of. One of the first chapters to organize in the state of North Dakota when it was the Walsh County Agricultural School more than 75 years ago, it is now the only chapter in the county, boasts a membership of 24 students and an active itinerary the entire school year.
The national organization was founded by a group of young farmers in 1928 as the “Future Farmers of America” (FFA) with a mission  to prepare future generations for meeting the challenges of feeding a growing population. The focus was not only on planting and harvesting, but on the science, business and art of farming. (more…)
