Floodwaters recede in Walsh County

Some dikes could come down as early as next week
GRAFTON – Rivers in Walsh County that were at major flood stage just over a week ago are now back in their banks.
The Park River at Grafton reached 16.11 feet last Wednesday, only four-tenths of a foot below the flood of record that inundated Grafton in 1948. The 2013 flood comes in as the fourth highest on record.
The forecast for the Forest River at Minto originally called for the probability of a crest of 9.5 feet. However, much to the relief of many residents, the Forest River crested at 8.28 feet on April 30. Highway 81 was closed for more than two days because of the flooding but reopened last Wednesday, May 1. (more…)

Administration building to get facelift

GRAFTON–The Walsh County Administration Building (WCAB) will be getting a facelift this summer. At Monday’s regular monthly meeting of the Walsh County Commission, the commissioners unanimously approved a motion to go ahead with a project to re-side the building.
The WCAB’s present siding has been having problems with the rock surface crumbling. The WCAB houses the Veterans Service Office, Office of Emergency Management and the Walsh County Health Department.
According to Wanda Kratochvil, who was authorized to solicit bids for the project, only one company decided to submit a bid.
Kratochvil contacted several local construction firms. She said some replied and said they would not be submitting a bid, others did not reply at all. (more…)

Search continues for missing man

MINTO  – The search continues more than a week after a rural Grafton man was swept away by floodwaters in a coulee approximately 2 ½ miles southwest of Minto.
On Monday, April 29, Gregory Guy Miller, 55, was traveling east to west on a gravel road.
It was then Miller attempted to cross a large expanse of water flowing over the road when the pickup he was driving was swept into a coulee.
The pickup was pushed downstream a considerable distance before getting hung up on a bank of the coulee.
According to the report at 7:05 p.m., April 29, 911 dispatch received a report of a man on a pickup in the floodwaters southwest of Minto.
Miller had called a friend on his cell phone and when the friend arrived, they exchanged waves. At that time Miller was standing on the running board of the pickup. The friend left to try and get closer and when he returned, Miller was gone. (more…)

WCSS board found in violation of open meeting laws

GRAFTON – On March 28 and April 3, the Walsh County Social Service Board (WCSSB), at its regular monthly meeting twice went into an executive session to discuss personnel matters. It’s been determined that those meetings violated North Dakota State Century Code.
On March 28, the WCSSB, in the open part of their meeting met with Social Worker III Kenyetta Wakini about various concerns she had in the workplace.
Wakini was put on administrative leave on Feb. 1, by Walsh County Social Services Director (WCSS) Twila Novak after alleged reports that Wakini was rude to clients and that she had an inappropriate exchange with Novak. (more…)
