All state run
Thompson finishes eighth in Valley City
The Grafton Spoilers Cross Country teams concluded their season on Saturday at the North Dakota State Girls and Boys meet that was held at the Bjornson Golf Course in Valley City.
Thompson, a junior, was the Spoilers’ top finisher with a time of 17:33.61 and placed eighth overall. The Grafton boys’ team finished seventh with a score of 270.
“It was awesome that Josh (Thompson) placed eighth out of 207 runners,” said coach Jeff McKay. “Josh is a very focused runner. Next year I am sure he will be working to be the number one runner in the state. He has that ability.”
“David Suda also had an outstanding race for a sophomore. He placed 22nd in the state, only two spots from all-state honors. I told him after the race that in the top 22 there were 10 seniors, so he should be an all-state runner next year,” said McKay.
The Spoilers’ girls team finished 11th with Jessica Johnson finishing 47th in a time of 17:02.41.
“In the girls race we had some issues. Jessica did not get out fast enough so she got bumped around a little, then got tripped up not once but twice during the race and did not have a chance to fully recover and make up the lost ground,” said McKay. “As a team, all of the runners ran a faster time than they did when we ran in Valley City in the middle of September so we have some very good young runners coming back next year and hope to make some great improvements on our finish next year,” added McKay.
