Aggie girls lose close game
Park River-F-L 7-7 in season play
As the perfect storm was building on the East Coast this past weekend, the Munich-Starkweather Magic Storm were busy brewing their own brand of havoc in the Park River gym last Thursday.
The Storm went on to defeat the Aggies 52-47 in a makeup game that was originally cancelled due to a winter storm in the valley.
In the first quarter the Aggies jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead behind the play of Ashley Fontaine. The junior scored four of the Aggies first seven points and had PRFL ahead early. Sadie Vold added a pair of baskets midway through the quarter and when Brogan Novak hit a shot just before the buzzer, the Aggies had a 12-8 lead after one.
The Aggies would actually lead at three of the four quarter breaks as they built on their early leads. The Aggies led at the half 29-26 and after three at 39-38.
It was Fontaine and Vold that kept the Aggies rolling offensively in the second quarter. When Fontaine hit a short runner at the 3:24 mark PR-F-L had its largest lead of the game at 25-19. PRFL would close out the first half up by three.
Whitney Carlson started the second half with a three-pointer and then hit one of two free throws to get the Aggies up 34-29. The Storm meanwhile relied on the outside shooting of sophomores Casey Harder and Abbie Bertsch. The two led the Storm for most of the first three quarters before giving way to the inside game of junior Kaisa Morstad. Morstad’s basket on the Storm’s first possession of the fourth quarter gave Munich-Starkweather it’s first lead of the game and they would never give it back.
The Aggies had their chances to tie the game late, but PRFL would not score again after a Carlson basket brought them to within two at 49-47 with 1:50 to play. From there it was turnovers that hurt the Aggie chances of pulling off the win. With the loss the Aggies season mark stands at an even 7-7 with three weeks of the season left before district tournament play begins on March 1.
Leading the Aggies in scoring was Sadie Vold who had 13, followed by Whitney Carlson with 11. Brogan Novak added seven for PR-F-L, followed by Ashley Fontaine with six, Hannah Swartz and Morgan Porter with four each, while Claire Welch and Bailey Beneda each added one.
The Storm were led by Casey Harder who finished with 15 points.
